Welcome to the Home of the Spartan "Legion" Marching Band
Welcome to the online home of the Norfolk State University Spartan "Legion" Band!

The Norfolk State University Spartan "Legion" is a high-stepping marching band obtaining the title as one of the most prestigious HBCU bands in the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference. It is one of the top bands in the United States recognized for their unmatched musicianship and magnificent showmanship, excellence, skill, and hard-work. With a band full of dedicated students and determined staff, the Spartan "Legion" continues to set trends across bands with their charisma, technique, and a strong musical bond untouched and unmatched by anyone.

Under the direction of Dr. O'Neill Sanford since 1998, The Spartan "Legion" continues to grow a stronger fan base, better program, and a stronger musical tradition with the thought of spreading love for the “Legion” across the country!

» Dr. O'Neil Sanford
is one of the premier music educators/directors in the nation. Since becoming a music educator in 1965, he has held numerous positions in the field of Music including Director of Bands at the University of Minnesota, and the University of Pittsburgh. He currently serves as the Director of Bands at Norfolk State University. is one of the premier music educators/directors in the nation. (BAND STAFF) consists of world renowned clinicians; Mr. Paul Adams, Ms. Stephanie Sanders, Dr. Timmey T. Zachery, Mr. William Beathea, Mrs.Inez Howard, and Vedette Spellman

» Dr. O'Neil Sanford
is one of the premier music educators/directors in the nation. » Mr. Paul I. Adams
is one of the leading arrangers in the country. He has written music for some of the nation's top marching band programs including: University of Minnesota, Jackson State University, and University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Adams was previously Assistant Band Director of Bands at Jackson State University, Director of Bands at Howard University, and currently the Associate Director of Bands, Chief Arranger, and Low Brass instructor at Norfolk State University.



» Ms. Stephanie K. Sanders
is a graduate of Jackson State University (Baccalaureate), University of Houston (Masters), and currently studies at Regent University. She was the Assistant Band Director at Alcorn State University. Ms. Sanders is the Woodwind Instructor, Jazz Band Director, and Assistant Band Director at Norfolk State University.





» Dr.Timmey Zachery
is a graduate of Norfolk State University (Masters and Baccalaureate) Indiana University (DMA{ABD}); he currently high brass instructor, Assistant Symphonic and Assistant Marching Band Director at Norfolk State University

» Mr. William H. Beathea
is a graduate of Ball State University (Baccalaureate), and Eastern Illinois University (Masters). He was Assistant Band Director at Jackson State University, and is currently the Million Dollar Funk Squad Percussion Instructor, Pep Band Director, and Assistant Marching Band Director at Norfolk Sate University.





» Vedette Spellman
is a graduate of Norfolk State University (Baccalaureate) and former Captain of the Silkettes Flag Squad; she currently serves its Coordinator.







» Mrs. Inez Howard
is a retired Physical Education and Dance Instructor from Norfolk State University. She has provided outstanding instruction and leadership to the "Hot Ice" dance line since it's inception.
