Public Relations
Student Society of America

Norfolk State University, an Historically Black College and University in southeast Virginia, is one of the few HBCUs that has a Public Relations Student Society of America chapter. NSU's PRSSA gives students great opportunities to network, develop leadership skills, obtain internships and mentorships for student growth and development.

PRSSA's professional organization affiliation is PRSA, the Public Relations Society Of America, composed of professionals in the field who are established public relations practitioners. One major goal of PRSSA is to strengthen each chapter's relationship with their PRSA sponsoring chapter and professional advisor. The national headquarters also provides students with scholarships, internships and is host to national and regional conferences.

Our NSU chapter is no exception. We want to help and educate our members and other students who want a career in the field of public relations. We provide our members with experienced speakers who have vast knowledge in their field of PR. For students to actually experience public relations in a professional setting, our chapter sends two students on the first Wednesday of each month to the PRSA Hampton Roads Chapter luncheons, free of charge. Another way our members experience the field of public relations is through national competitions sponsored by the national PRSSA headquarters. Our students compete with students from other chapters for scholarship money and prizes. Through these activities and others, students gain valuable public relations experience which helps many graduates land that important first job in the highly competitive public relations industry.

Although we get our members involved in public relations, our chapter is not all work and no play. We sponsor fun activities for our members, such as member gatherings and other social functions.

Our NSU chapter of PRSSA is a well rounded organization that helps students achieve a better understanding of public relations and what it's all about. And we always hope to recruit enthusiastic members who want to join in on the fun!

If you are interested in our organization, please contact our chapter's faculty advisor Dr. Marcia Taylor.
