The Spartan Echo is Norfolk State University's campus newspaper and is administrated through NSU's Office of Student Affairs. It's published during the academic year by a staff of student volunteers who are regularly advised by a Mass Communications and Journalism Department faculty member.

Every NSU student has the opportunity to gain valuable print journalism experience through volunteer associations with the paper as a reporter, editor, photographer, or graphic artist. In addition, some individual courses in Mass Communications and Journalism require students to produce original material for the Spartan Echo as part of their course work.

Thus, a student who begins working with the Spartan Echo as a freshman volunteer, and continues working with the Spartan Echo in various capacities, graduates with at least four years of experience in print journalism. That, along with a baccalaureate degree from NSU Mass Communications and Journalism, has helped many graduates land that important first job in the highly competitive print journalism industry.
