THE HISTORY DEPARTMENT

The History Department at Norfolk State University offers a spectrum of courses in local, national, and world history. Departmental faculty work in tandem with students to create an active community, where civic-oriented historians study their city's past in order to improve their nation's present and their world's future.

The general objectives of the department are:
* To familiarize students with the traditions of American history.
* To acquaint students with the contributions of African Americans to history.
* To prepare students to understand the heritage of world civilizations.
* To foster an informed understanding and tolerance of other world civilizations.
* To enhance students' intellectual perspective
* To develop students' research, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
* To prepare students to be responsible members of a democratic society.
* To prepare departmental majors for their professions.
