The Writing Center

The English and Foreign Languages Writing Program offers undergraduate and graduate student writers free, individual conferences with trained tutors who lend assistance with writing assignments in any discipline. Located in Madison Hall, the Writing Program welcomes all in need of our services.  Workshops are scheduled three times each semester to help students prepare for the Examination of Writing Competency, English 299.  (Specific dates and times will be announced in class by instructors.)Writing Program tutors work with students on the full range of college writing assignments, from a first freshman essay in Expository Writing to a senior thesis, from a lab for material sciences to an application essay for graduate school.Tutors can also help at any stage of the writing process, whether clarifying an initial focus, developing a thesis, structuring an argument, integrating sources, or revising a draft. Tutors do not edit or proofread papers, although they can help students learn to identify patterns of error, such as recurrent comma splices. The goal of the Writing Program is to help students develop their own writing abilities and to become skilled readers of their own writing.
