Dr. James Howell, a retired senior professor of English and former director of the Graduate Program in Communication at the University, now serves as an adjunct professor. He received an associate of arts degree in English, with honors, from Norfolk State University and a bachelor of arts and master of arts degree from Howard University, with distinction. As a Ford Foundation Scholar, Dr. Howell was awarded the Ph.D. in English language and communication at New York University.
While a student at Norfolk State University, Dr. Howell served as president of the Student Government Association, captain of the debate team, and staff writer for the Spartan Echo newspaper.
Professor Howell holds membership in the College Language Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, the Middle Atlantic Writers Association, the International Reading Association, and the Virginia Association of Teachers of English. He was selected to appear in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers for 2005.
Professor Howell’s favorite authors are Langston Hughes and Richard Wright.
