Professor Davis, adjunct professor of English, began service to the university in 1984. He received his bachelor of arts in English from Norfolk State University and completed his graduate education (master of science) in theoretical linguistics at Georgetown University.  He has done further advanced study in Shakespeare and the Romantic writers at the University of Chicago, Duke University, Colgate University, Kenyon College, and the University of Wisconsin.  Davis has served as chairman of the Department of English at Azalea Garden Middle School and Booker T. Washington High School.  He also currently serves on the English faculty at Indian River High School. Professor Davis has been a national reader and examiner for the College Board, grading Advanced Placement English exams since 2004. He has received five prestigious fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities to study Shakespeare, the English Romantic Writers, Abolitionists Writers, Renaissance Poetry, and Martin Luther ( 1990, 1993, 1996, 2002, 2004) at the University of Chicago, Kenyon College, Colgate University, the University of Wisconsin.  Davis teaches junior and senior level English courses, such as English 286 (Advanced Composition for English majors), English 350 (Seminar in Literary Analysis and Interpretation), English 413 (Shakespeare), English 419 (Contemporary American English Grammar), and English 460 (The Assessment and Evaluation of Composition). His membership in professional organizations includes but is not limited to the National Council of Teachers of English, The Virginia Association of Teachers of English, The Linguistic Society of America, etc.  From 1995 to 2004 Davis has been named Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.  An ordained minister, Professor Davis is the pastor of the Bibleway Evangelistic Temple Church of God in Christ.

 

Davis’ favorite novel is Crime and Punishment by Feodor Dostoevsky
