Dr. Annie Suite Perkins, an NSU alumna, heads the Department of English and Foreign Languages. She began graduate study in English at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and completed her master of arts degree requirements at Old Dominion University with a concentration in linguistics. She received her Ph.D. degree from Howard University with a concentration in 17th century British poetry and African-American literature. Her dissertation explored the sonnets of Gwendolyn Brooks within the English sonnet tradition.
Her publications include “The Effects of Evil in Ann Petry’s ‘The Street’: Invoking Biblical and Literary Traditions” in The Critical Response to Ann Petry (2005, Greenwood Press) and “The Sonnets of Gwendolyn Brooks” in Women Making Art: The Visual, Literary, and Performing Arts Since 1960 (2000, Peter Lang).
In 1992, Dr. Perkins coached the University’s Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Team, which won the national championship in Los Angeles, California, and the $50,000 prize.
Dr. Perkins’s favorite novels are Twain’s Huckleberry Finn, Morrison’s Song of Solomon and any Dorothy Sayers mystery.
